{"id":18,"date":"2017-09-20T20:38:59","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T20:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ootp.cavebutter.net\/blog\/?p=18"},"modified":"2017-09-21T04:15:01","modified_gmt":"2017-09-21T04:15:01","slug":"tables-post-1-some-notes-creating-the-db-cities-and-nations-tables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ootp.cavebutter.net\/blog\/archives\/18","title":{"rendered":"<font color='#1e73be'>Tables Post 1: Some Notes, Creating the DB, Cities and Nations Tables<\/font>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a lot of tables that can be dumped from OOTP, and at this point I don&#8217;t need \u00a0nearly all of them. \u00a0 \u00a0With the exception of the &#8216;nations&#8217; and &#8216;cities&#8217; tables, they will all be focused on teams, leagues, and players.<\/p>\n<p>A few important notes that I want to put up front so they don&#8217;t get lost in the code:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I am not using Foreign Keys (FK&#8217;s) in this database.<\/strong> There are two reasons for this. \u00a0First, probably due to ignorance, I was having a lot of trouble getting them set up. \u00a0There are only so many hours a person can research solutions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=mysql+foreign+key+error+1215&amp;oq=mysql+foreign+key+error+1215&amp;gs_l=psy-ab.3..0.26277.27110.0.27416.5.5.0.0.0.0.94.403.5.5.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..0.5.403...0i22i30k1.0.BtoivDz0uVY\">Error 1215<\/a>\u00a0before he just throws up his hands and quits. \u00a0Second, as long as we&#8217;re properly indexed, FK&#8217;s shouldn&#8217;t have much impact on query performance. \u00a0As long as I can trust the data OOTP dumps to have referential integrity (and I do), then we should be OK.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve added AUTO_INCREMENT ID&#8217;s to player_career and league_history tables. \u00a0Without them, the Primary Keys for these tables would be ridiculously composite, and still have PK violations when data is imported. \u00a0I will note these in the code.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create the database.<\/strong> Easy enough. \u00a0This bit wipes the database and starts fresh:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"line-numbers\"><code class=\"language-sql\">DROP DATABASE IF EXISTS TEST1;\r\nCREATE DATABASE TEST1;\r\nUSE TEST1;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create nations table<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have any plans to use this table right now, I can maybe see a potential use case when using a larger universe.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"line-numbers\"><code class=\"language-sql\">CREATE TABLE `nations` (\r\n  `nation_id` int(11) NOT NULL,\r\n  `name` varchar(50) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `short_name` varchar(50) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `abbreviation` varchar(50) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `demonym` varchar(50) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `population` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `gender` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `baseball_quality` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `continent_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `main_language_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `quality_total` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `capital_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `use_hardcoded_ml_player_origins` tinyint(4) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `this_is_the_usa` tinyint(4) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  PRIMARY KEY (`nation_id`)\r\n) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create cities table<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similar to above, though more potential use cases. \u00a0Particularly thinking about the owner goals in game where you are asked to sign a &#8220;home town player.&#8221;<\/p>\n<pre class=\"line-numbers\"><code class=\"language-sql\">CREATE TABLE `cities` (\r\n  `city_id` int(11) NOT NULL,\r\n  `nation_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `state_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `name` varchar(80) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `abbreviation` varchar(10) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `latitude` double DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `longitude` double DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `population` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  `main_language_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL,\r\n  PRIMARY KEY (`city_id`)\r\n) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1;<\/code><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a lot of tables that can be dumped from OOTP, and at this point I don&#8217;t need \u00a0nearly all of them. \u00a0 \u00a0With the exception of the &#8216;nations&#8217; and &#8216;cities&#8217; tables, they will all be focused on teams, leagues, and players.
